Atomic Hyperfine Splitting in Rubidium

چکیده
In its ground state, rubidium (Rb) has a single 5s electron outside a closed shell; the principal structure of its excited states is therefore similar to that of hydrogen. The first excited state is split in two by the spin-orbit interaction, and each of these levels is split further by the hyperfine interaction. Neglecting relativistic and reduced-mass effects, the Hamiltonian consists of four terms:

Measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 6S1Õ2 level in rubidium
We present a measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 6S1/2 excited level of rubidium using two-photon absorption spectroscopy in a glass cell. The values we obtain for the magnetic dipole constant A are 239.18 03 MHz and 807.66 08 MHz for Rb and Rb, respectively. The combination of the magnetic moments of the two isotopes and our measurements show a hyperfine anomaly in this atomic excite...
متن کاملOptical pumping and readout of bismuth hyperfine states in silicon for atomic clock applications
The push for a semiconductor-based quantum information technology has renewed interest in the spin states and optical transitions of shallow donors in silicon, including the donor bound exciton transitions in the near-infrared and the Rydberg, or hydrogenic, transitions in the mid-infrared. The deepest group V donor in silicon, bismuth, has a large zero-field ground state hyperfine splitting, c...
متن کاملLifetime and hyperfine splitting measurements on the 7s and 6p levels in rubidium
We present lifetime measurements of the 7S1/2 level and the 6p manifold of rubidium. We use a timecorrelated single-photon counting technique on a sample of 85Rb atoms confined and cooled in a magneto-optic trap. The upper state of the 5P1/2 repumping transition serves as the resonant intermediate level for twophoton excitation of the 7s level. A probe laser provides the second step of the exci...
متن کاملHyperfine Spectroscopy of Optically Trapped Atoms
We perform spectroscopy on the hyperfine splitting of Rb atoms trapped in far-off-resonance optical traps. The existence of a spatially dependent shift in the energy levels is shown to induce an inherent dephasing effect, which causes a broadening of the spectroscopic line and hence an inhomogeneous loss of atomic coherence at a much faster rate than the homogeneous one caused by spontaneous ph...
متن کاملComparison of hyperfine anomalies in the 5 S 1 / 2 and 6 S 1 / 2 levels of 85 Rb and 87 Rb .
We observe a hyperfine anomaly in the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 6S1/2 excited level in rubidium. We perform two step spectroscopy using the 5S1/2 → 5P1/2 → 6S1/2 excitation sequence. We measure the splitting of the 6S1/2 level and obtain for the magnetic dipole constants of Rb and Rb A = 239.18(4) MHz and A = 807.66(8) MHz, respectively. The hyperfine anomaly difference of 8...
